Authorized distributor for Eaton, Titan Flow Control, Hayward, Mueller, Shelco, Spears, and more. Simplex, duplex, Y-strainers, fabricated, and self-cleaning strainers for every application.
Industrial pipeline strainers remove solid particles from liquid flowing through a piping system. Their primary purpose is to protect expensive downstream equipment such as pumps, meters, spray nozzles, compressors, and turbines from debris that can cause clogging, wear, and costly damage. Strainers use a metal basket or screen with perforations or mesh to capture particles while allowing clean liquid to pass through. Commercial Filtration Supply is an authorized distributor for the top brands in the industry and carries strainers in a wide range of configurations, materials, and sizes.
Types of Industrial Strainers
Simplex Strainers feature a single filtration chamber with a basket that collects debris. The pipeline must be shut down to clean or replace the basket, making simplex strainers ideal for applications where periodic maintenance shutdowns are acceptable. They are the most economical strainer design and are found across nearly every industry.
Duplex (Multiplex) Strainers feature two independent basket chambers and a diverter valve that directs flow between them. While one chamber is in service, the other can be cleaned or maintained without interrupting flow. Duplex strainers are essential for applications that require continuous operation and cannot tolerate downtime for basket changes.
Y (Wye) Strainers are compact, in-line strainers designed for removing smaller amounts of debris from steam, gas, or liquid. They can be installed horizontally or vertically and are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, bronze, PVC, and CPVC. Many models include a blow-off valve for quick and easy cleaning without removing the strainer from the line.
Self-Cleaning Strainers are motorized to backwash automatically, removing collected solids without manual intervention. They eliminate the need for routine basket emptying and provide true continuous operation. Self-cleaning strainers can replace both simplex and duplex strainers in applications where reduced maintenance and uninterrupted flow are priorities.
Fabricated Strainers are custom-engineered for applications that fall outside standard catalog specifications. Options include ASME "U" and "UM" code stamps, NSF approved coatings, and designs built to Brazilian and European standards. CFS works directly with manufacturers who use experienced engineers to develop solutions for your specific requirements.
How to Select the Right Pipeline Strainer
Selecting the correct strainer depends on your system requirements and operating conditions, such as:
Continuous vs. intermittent flow
Particle size and type
Flow rate and pipe size
Pressure drop
Construction material
Connection type
Operating temperature
WOG rating

Maintenance and Performance
All pipeline strainers require some level of maintenance to perform effectively. As debris collects in the basket, flow rate decreases and the pressure differential across the strainer increases. Monitoring this pressure drop is the most reliable way to determine when a basket needs to be cleaned or replaced.
For simplex strainers, the line must be shut down for basket service. Duplex strainers allow you to divert flow to the second chamber and service the first without stopping the process. Self-cleaning strainers handle this automatically through motorized backwash cycles. Choosing the right strainer type for your maintenance capacity and production requirements is just as important as choosing the right size and material.
Replacement baskets and screens are available for all strainer models we carry. Baskets come in perforated, mesh, and mesh-lined configurations with a range of opening sizes. Visit our replacement parts page for baskets, gaskets, covers, and hardware.
