When to Use Offline Filtration
Offline filtration systems are valuable across a wide range of scenarios, not just as a supplement to inline filters during normal operation. Common use cases include:
- Kidney-loop filtration during operation to continuously maintain reservoir cleanliness while the machine runs
- Filtering incoming hydraulic fluid before adding it to bulk storage or directly to a reservoir. New oil is not clean oil; it typically arrives at ISO cleanliness levels far higher than what your system requires.
- Flushing hydraulic systems after maintenance, component replacement, or repair to remove assembly debris, weld slag, and contaminants introduced during the work
- Filling new systems with pre-filtered fluid to ensure the system starts clean
- Fluid transfer between drums, totes, and reservoirs while filtering simultaneously
- Emergency cleanup after a contamination event such as a hose failure, seal leak, or component breakdown
Eaton Offline Filtration Product Lines
Stationary Offline Filter Units, US Series
The US Series is designed for permanent installation on a single machine or reservoir. These units are equipped with a gear pump driven by an electric motor that continuously circulates fluid through the filter and returns conditioned fluid back to the reservoir. Once started, the unit operates without supervision.
US Series circulation filter units are particularly well suited for oil service on gearboxes and other systems using hydraulic or lubricating fluids, including higher-viscosity gear oils. A dedicated offline unit allows filtration to continue independently from the primary lubrication or hydraulic circuit.
For facilities that need ongoing filtration on a specific piece of equipment, the US Series provides a dedicated stationary solution for fine filtration, filling, and flushing applications.
Mobile Offline Filter Units, UM Series
The UM Series provides portable offline filtration that can be moved between machines, reservoirs, or service locations.
These mobile filter units are designed for applications including:
- Fine filtration of hydraulic and lubricating fluids
- Filling reservoirs with filtered fluid
- Flushing systems following service or maintenance
- Transferring fluid between containers or equipment
- Servicing multiple machines with a single filtration unit
The UM Series is well suited for facilities where filtration requirements are periodic or where one mobile system needs to support multiple pieces of equipment.
Mobile Fluid Cleaning Systems, IFPM Series
The IFPM Series fluid purifier systems are designed to remove free, emulsified, and dissolved water as well as solid contaminants from hydraulic and lubrication fluids. This makes the IFPM Series particularly valuable where moisture contamination cannot be adequately addressed through conventional particle filtration alone.
Eaton designed the IFPM Series for a broad range of fluid viscosities and applications, from transformer oils through heavy gear lubricants. The systems are fully automated and PLC-controlled, with a compact mobile design suitable for use in confined areas and for movement between systems as needed.
Two standard sizes are available:
- 7.9 gal/min, 30 L/min
- 18.5 gal/min, 70 L/min
A standard WSPS 05 water sensor provides continuous monitoring of fluid water saturation, helping operators track fluid condition throughout the purification process.
For facilities dealing with recurring water contamination, high-value lubricants, transformer oils, or other applications where both moisture and solid contamination must be controlled, the IFPM Series provides a more specialized fluid cleaning solution than a conventional offline filter unit.
Product Comparison
| Specification | US Series | UM Series | IFPM Series |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Stationary | Mobile / portable | Mobile / automated |
| Best for | Dedicated filtration on a single machine or reservoir | Servicing multiple machines with one portable unit | Systems where both particle and water contamination are a concern |
| Pump | Gear pump, electric motor-driven | Electric motor-driven | Electric motor-driven, PLC-controlled |
| Available sizes | US 10 through US 640 | Multiple configurations | Two standard sizes |
| Flow rates | Multiple options based on model size | Multiple options based on model size | 7.9 gal/min, 30 L/min and 18.5 gal/min, 70 L/min |
| Contaminants removed | Solid particles, water | Solid particles | Solid particles, free water, emulsified water, dissolved water |
| Fluid types | Hydraulic oil, lubricating oil, gear oil | Hydraulic oil, lubricating oil | Transformer oils through heavy gear lubricants |
| Max inlet particle size | Less than 200 micron | Less than 200 micron | Less than 200 micron |
| Water monitoring | Not standard | Not standard | Standard, WSPS 05 sensor |
| Operation | Continuous, unsupervised | Periodic, as needed | Fully automated |
| Applications | Fine filtration, filling, flushing | Fine filtration, filling, flushing, fluid transfer | Combined particle and water removal, fluid conditioning |
Stationary vs. Mobile vs. Fluid Purifier: How to Choose
| Factor | US Series, Stationary | UM Series, Mobile | IFPM Series, Fluid Purifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Dedicated filtration on a single machine or reservoir | Servicing multiple machines with one unit | Systems where both particle and water contamination are a concern |
| Installation | Permanently connected to one reservoir | Portable, moved between machines | Portable, moved between machines |
| Contaminants removed | Solid particles, water | Solid particles | Solid particles, free/emulsified/dissolved water |
| Operation | Continuous, unsupervised | Periodic, as needed | Automated, PLC-controlled |
| Viscosity range | Standard through high-viscosity gear oils | Standard hydraulic and lubricating oils | Transformer oils through heavy gear lubricants |
If the goal is continuous fluid conditioning on a dedicated machine or reservoir, the US Series provides a permanently installed solution.
If one filtration unit needs to be moved between machines for filling, flushing, transfer, or periodic filtration, the UM Series provides greater flexibility.
When water contamination is a significant concern, the IFPM Series adds specialized fluid purification capable of removing free, emulsified, and dissolved water in addition to solid contaminants.
Why Offline Filtration Matters
Inline filters installed in the hydraulic circuit protect specific components during operation, but they only filter fluid when the machine is running and only at the flow rates the circuit demands. Offline systems fill the gaps:
- They filter fluid continuously, even when the machine is idle
- They can be sized independently of the hydraulic circuit's flow requirements
- They can achieve higher filtration efficiency because they are not constrained by circuit pressure drop limits
- They extend the life of inline filter elements by reducing the overall contamination level in the reservoir
- They can target specific contaminants, including water and fine particles, with dedicated filter media
Studies consistently show that more than 80% of hydraulic system failures are contamination-related. Adding offline filtration to a system that relies solely on inline filters can significantly reduce failure rates, extend component life, and lower total maintenance costs.
Applications
Eaton hydraulic offline filtration systems from CFS are used across a wide range of industries and equipment types, including:
- Industrial hydraulic presses and machine tools
- Gearbox lubrication systems
- Wind turbine hydraulic and lubrication systems
- Power generation turbines
- Mobile construction and mining equipment
- Steel and metals processing
- Marine hydraulic systems
- Plastic injection molding machines
- Paper and printing equipment
- Transformer oil conditioning
Contamination Monitoring
Knowing the cleanliness level of your hydraulic fluid is essential for determining whether your offline filtration strategy is working. Eaton offers contamination monitoring equipment that provides real-time fluid cleanliness data per ISO 4406 standards. Pairing offline filtration with contamination monitoring gives you a complete picture of fluid condition and allows you to optimize filter element change intervals and system maintenance schedules.
Replacement Filter Elements
All Eaton offline filtration systems use replaceable filter elements that should be changed based on differential pressure or a scheduled maintenance interval. CFS stocks replacement elements for the US, UM, and IFPM series. Contact us with your unit model number for element identification, availability, pricing, and lead times.
