Why Monitor Hydraulic Fluid Contamination?
Contamination monitoring provides measurable information about fluid condition and the performance of the overall filtration system.
Monitoring can be used to:
- Verify filtration performance by confirming whether inline and offline filtration systems are maintaining the desired fluid cleanliness
- Monitor contamination trends to identify changes in fluid condition over time
- Support filter maintenance decisions with actual cleanliness data and system condition information
- Validate maintenance and flushing work by comparing fluid cleanliness before and after service
- Document cleanliness levels for systems with defined ISO, NAS, SAE, or equipment manufacturer requirements
- Troubleshoot contamination problems by taking measurements at different locations within the system
- Monitor water contamination in hydraulic and lubrication fluids where moisture is a concern
- Integrate fluid condition data into PLC, SCADA, and other plant monitoring systems with compatible Eaton equipment
Depending on the application, monitoring can be performed periodically using portable equipment or continuously through permanently installed sensors.
Understanding Hydraulic Fluid Cleanliness Standards
Eaton monitoring systems report contamination levels according to established industry standards. The two most common are:
ISO 4406:1999 is the international standard for reporting hydraulic fluid cleanliness. It assigns a three-number code, such as 18/16/13, representing the number of particles per milliliter at three size thresholds: greater than 4 micron, greater than 6 micron, and greater than 14 micron. Lower numbers mean cleaner fluid. Most hydraulic component manufacturers specify a target ISO code for their equipment.
NAS 1638 is an older standard that assigns a single class number, such as Class 7, based on particle counts across multiple size ranges. While ISO 4406 is now the primary standard, NAS 1638 is still widely used in aerospace, military, and legacy industrial applications.
All Eaton monitoring systems can report in ISO 4406:1999 format. Some models also support NAS 1638, SAE AS 4059, and GOST 17216.

Portable Monitoring
CCS 5 Contamination Control System
The CCS 5 Contamination Control System is a portable solution for measuring fluid condition across multiple hydraulic and lubrication systems.
The CCS 5 measures:
- Solid contamination and particle size distribution
- Fluid cleanliness class
- Water saturation
- Fluid temperature
- Theoretical water content
The system can be used with pressurized systems during operation or for unpressurized fluid sampling. Multiple measuring programs support single, continuous, cyclical, and online measurements.
Measurement data can be transferred for analysis and management, and the CCS 5 is also available with an optional thermal printer for producing measurement results in the field.
The CCS 5 is well suited for maintenance teams that need one portable monitoring system for multiple machines, commissioning work, troubleshooting, or periodic fluid condition checks.
Inline Monitoring
CCM 01 Contamination Control Monitor Set
The CCM 01 Contamination Control Monitor Set is designed for permanent inline contamination monitoring.
The system combines an Eaton particle sensor with a dedicated display unit to continuously monitor fluid contamination. Results can be displayed according to ISO 4406 or NAS 1638 cleanliness classifications.
The CCM 01 also supports programmable monitoring thresholds. When a defined contamination level is exceeded, the system can provide an output signal to alert operators or support additional control functions.
Measurement data can be managed using Eaton's LabVIEW Data Manager software and exported to Microsoft Excel for additional analysis or recordkeeping.
For critical hydraulic or lubrication equipment where operators need continuous local visibility into fluid cleanliness, the CCM 01 provides a permanently installed monitoring solution.
CCT 01 Contamination Class Transmitter
The CCT 01 Contamination Class Transmitter is designed for applications where contamination data needs to be incorporated directly into a facility's automation or condition monitoring infrastructure.
The system uses particle sensing equipment with a transmitter that converts contamination class measurements into electrical output signals, including 4-20 mA outputs for ISO 4406 cleanliness data.
This allows contamination information to be integrated with:
- PLC systems
- SCADA systems
- Centralized condition monitoring
- Plant automation systems
- Data acquisition equipment
The CCT 01 is appropriate when fluid cleanliness needs to be monitored as part of the plant's broader automated control environment rather than only through a standalone local display.
PFS 02 Particle Flow Sensor
The PFS 02 Particle Flow Sensor provides compact particle contamination measurement for hydraulic and lubrication systems.
The sensor can determine contamination classes according to:
- ISO 4406
- SAE AS 4059
- NAS 1638
- GOST 17216
The PFS 02 can be permanently mounted to stationary equipment for continuous or periodic measurement or incorporated into a mobile monitoring configuration.
This makes it useful when particle sensing needs to be added to an existing condition monitoring system or incorporated into a custom monitoring configuration.
Water Sensors
WSPS 05 Water Saturation Probe Sensor
The WSPS 05 Water Saturation Probe Sensor provides continuous monitoring of water saturation in hydraulic and lubrication fluids.
Water contamination requires different measurement capabilities than solid particle contamination. The WSPS 05 can therefore be used alongside particle monitoring equipment when both fluid cleanliness and moisture need to be monitored.
The WSPS 05 is also used with Eaton IFPM fluid purifier systems, where it provides ongoing water saturation monitoring during fluid purification.

How to Choose the Right Monitoring Solution
Portable, CCS 5 if you need to check fluid cleanliness across multiple machines, verify fluid condition during commissioning or after maintenance, or do not need continuous real-time monitoring. The CCS 5 also measures water and temperature, making it the most versatile single unit.
Inline with display, CCM 01 if you need continuous monitoring on a critical system with local visibility. The display unit shows real-time cleanliness data and the alarm function alerts operators when thresholds are exceeded.
Inline with PLC output, CCT 01 if your facility uses centralized monitoring and the contamination data needs to integrate with SCADA, PLC, or other automated control systems.
Compact inline sensor, PFS 02 if you need to add particle sensing capability to an existing system or monitoring infrastructure. The PFS 02 is the sensor component that connects to various display and transmitter options.
Water sensor, WSPS 05 if water contamination is a known concern in your system, either as a standalone sensor or paired with particle monitoring equipment.
Portable vs. Continuous Contamination Monitoring
Not every hydraulic system requires permanently installed contamination monitoring.
Portable monitoring can be appropriate when:
- Multiple machines need to be tested with one device
- Fluid samples are checked on a scheduled basis
- Cleanliness needs to be verified after maintenance or flushing
- Equipment is being commissioned
- A contamination problem is being investigated
- Permanent monitoring is not economically justified for every machine
Continuous inline monitoring can be appropriate when:
- Fluid cleanliness is critical to equipment operation
- Contamination trends need to be tracked continuously
- Operators need immediate indication of changing fluid conditions
- Cleanliness limits must trigger an alarm or control response
- Contamination data needs to feed into PLC or SCADA systems
- Equipment downtime or component damage carries significant operational consequences
Facilities may also use a combination of both approaches, with permanent monitoring on critical equipment and portable equipment for periodic testing throughout the rest of the facility.

Pairing Contamination Monitoring with Filtration
Contamination monitoring and offline filtration work together as a complete contamination control strategy. The monitoring system tells you how clean your fluid is; the filtration system does the work of getting it there. Together they allow you to set a target cleanliness level, verify that filtration is maintaining it, and respond quickly when contamination events occur.
CFS carries the full Eaton hydraulic filtration line including offline filtration systems, lubrication filters, and contamination monitoring equipment. Our team can help you build a contamination control program that matches your equipment and cleanliness requirements.
