Spears is one of the leading producers of PVC and CPVC valves, fittings, and strainers. Y-strainers are a compact solution that fits right into a pipeline. Despite not being metal, these strainers are rugged and can handle high pressures and a wide range of liquids. Spears also has a clear PVC option, which allows easy monitoring of flow and sediment accumulation. For metal fragment straining, you can include a magnetic drain plug, which automatically collects metal debris for quick flushing.

When to Use Spears Y Strainers

Spears Y-Strainers are an ideal option for low-temperature applications that require in-line filtering. These strainers can be placed horizontally or vertically, giving you multiple installation options. PVC has a relatively low temperature tolerance of 140F(60C), but CPVC can handle temperatures up to 200F (93C), making it ideal for hot water uses. These materials are strong for plastics, with ½”-2” sizes rated for 150psi and 3”-4” sizes rated for 90psi. With EPDM and Viton O-ring options and a wide range screen mesh materials/sizes, the possibilities are enormous.

Another reason to choose a PVC or CPVC strainer is the price. They are much less expensive than metal Y-strainers, which is often why manufacturers use plastics instead of metals. With flanged ends available, Spears Y-Strainers can be integrated into a metal pipeline if the materials and temperatures are compatible. Spears Y-Strainers are also available with socket or threaded ends, so they can be used with all PVC/CPVC systems as well. The strength of these Y-strainers is in their affordability and versatility.
