What is an RTJ Flange & What are the Typical Applications for Use?

Mark Ligon |

Flanges are tools that connect equipment and pipe together. They are just one of many joining methods but are mostly used for high pressure or large size applications where joints will likely need to be dismantled. RTJ Flange or RTJF is short for Ring Type Joint Flange.

What is an RTJ Flange?

An RTJ flange refers to the type of gasket required for the flange. They are used in many industries and applications.

The RTJ flange creates a seal. It is used to form the seal that joins two rigid surfaces together. The surface must also be strong enough to support the weight of the connecting parts and ensure that they are held firmly in place by the seal that the flange forms. On the flange, a groove or channel is cut into the face. The gasket or ring is placed inside this groove and when the flange is secured to the y-strainer a seal is created.

The purpose of an RTJ flange is to provide an adequate seal between two rigid surfaces, such as a gasket, while ensuring that they do not move relative to one another over long periods of time, such as when being subjected to extreme temperatures. This can be accomplished through a variety of means, including press-fit gaskets which allow for good contact between two materials but also allow for movement under extreme pressure.

An RTJ flange is commonly made from steel, copper, or nickel.

Applications for the RTJ Flange

You can find an RTJ gasket and flange used as standard or option end connection in a couple of different strainers. More specifically, this flange can be found in the Titan Y-Strainer Model YS 70-CS, Model YS 70-SS, YS 86-CS, and YS 86-SS. An RTJ flange can be used in most applications where a traditional flange is used, as long as it meets the required standardizations. Some applications also allow for different RTJ gasket uses. Some of the different RTJ Gaskets include R Oval, R Octagonal, RX, and BX.

Flanges are used to connect equipment and pipe together. It's just one of many joining methods, but most commonly used when the joints will need to be dismantled or for high pressure or large-size applications. One type is a ring-type joint flange, which has been shortened to RTJF in industry jargon. If you have any questions about what types of flanges we carry, don't hesitate to contact us!
