Hold an o-ring in your hands and it doesn't feel like much, but o-rings play an important role in the functionality of your filtration equipment. O-rings are usually made of an elastomer, which allows it to be be slightly compressed between two solid objects, creating a seal. This prevents liquids and other materials from getting past. As you can imagine, the ability to create a water-tight seal comes in handy in a liquid strainer or filter bag housing.

Most Eaton filtration vessels include a cover o-ring that helps keep the cover sealed, blocking bypass. Some vessels include other o-rings which serve a similar role elsewhere in the equipment. While all o-rings are made of a rubbery elastomer, there are several different materials that Eaton o-rings are made of. Sometimes you may have the option of two material types for your part, while some o-rings come standard in one material. A few common materials are EPDM (ethylene propylene diene), Buna-N (nitrile), and Viton (a popular brand of FKM).

Another factor that may determine which o-ring you need is the size of your vessel. Eaton strainers and housings are sized in inches and refer to the size pipe line it is designed to connect with. For instance, a strainer o-ring may be different for each size vessel offered. Eaton o-rings each have specific part numbers so it is easy to identify and re-order when you need a replacement. The Eaton Filtration Online team can look up your o-ring by part number or assist you in finding the one you need.

Why do o-rings need replacement? Like most parts, o-rings experience some wear and tear after long periods of use. Since they are also light and easily manipulated, they can be damaged or pinched if used improperly. If filtration is an integral part of your application, we recommend keeping several spare o-rings for your vessel just in case replacement is needed.
